Description:
Excellent scientists need excellent data, but they also need to be able to effectively communicate the results and significance of their research to their peers in the community. Writing good papers is hard work, even for experienced researchers. Being aware of the criteria which papers must meet and using the writing process efficiently can make the task easier. In this workshop, you will learn about the structural and language norms for papers published in English. You will also be introduced to a variety of writing strategies that will help you to draft your own texts efficiently, pinpoint their strengths and weaknesses, and revise them effectively.

Content:

• managing the writing process professionally
• understanding the drafting and revision processes
• finding a focus by identifying an appropiate research question
• becoming familiar with structural and language norms for English publications
• examining structural relationships within and between sections of a paper
• giving, receiving, and using feedback (peer review) effectively
• examining participants - texts with regard to structure and language
• creating precise, accurate, and correct sentences
• recognizing stylistically adequate and inadequate language

You will be asked to submit a text (abstract, section of a paper or thesis, etc., which will be treated confidentially if necessary) you are currently working on, prior to the workshop. We will work on your texts during the workshop.

After the workshop, participants will be able to:

• fulfil reviewers’ expectations concerning structural elements in research publications
• analyse the readership for their texts and formulate accordingly
• review and improve the structure (argumentation) of their own texts
• recognize non-standard use of language and grammar in their own texts and revise appropriately
• provide professional feedback on texts written by their peers

Many factors influence the success of a scientific presentation. Besides excellent scientific work and knowledge of the field, other important factors are:

• confident and authentic appearance
• clear structure and convincing argumentation
• more diversified style and dramaturgy
• motivation and activation of the audience
• adequate time management
• adequate use of media and comprehensive figure design
• intentional use of voice, body language and requisites

Therefore, the workshop will include the following topics:

• Proper preparation and planning of scientific presentations
• Attractive presentations - methods and media
• Do's and Don'ts of PowerPoint and comprehensive slide design
• Dealing with nervousness
• Goofs, mishaps and "disasters" - How to deal with?

Description:
Research science, by its very nature, is a collaborative venture. Being able to lead a team, motivate people and negotiate positive outcomes are skills essential in order to progress from a PhD level. Having a PhD means that you are going to be in a leadership position soon.

The scientific environment, in both academia and industry, creates its own particular set of challenges, as the teams are made up of highly intelligent, independent and innovative men and women. In such an environment, excellent leadership, motivational and negotiation skills are essential in order to ensure full use of all available talents and so achieve the appropriate success.

This workshop will cover how to motivate and persuade people, when it is appropriate to use authority, negotiating win-win outcomes, creating a "can-do" attitude and environment and dealing with conflict as well as conflicting motivations and goals. Participants will learn how to provide strong leadership and strong arguments when necessary and so forge efficient and productive teams - Essential for success in today’s competitive research environment.

This workshop covers:

• How to motivate people and persuade effectively
• The essentials of negotiation
• When it is appropriate to use authority
• Creating a "can-do" attitude and environment
• Dealing with conflicting motivations and resolving conflict

Die wissenschaftliche Veröffentlichung ist wie eine Visitenkarte: Ein erfolgreich publiziertes Research Paper stellt den Kontakt zu der Scientific Community her - und ein logisch und prägnant geschriebener Text dokumentiert, dass sein Autor wissenschaftlich und zielgerichtet arbeiten kann. Doch wie schreibt man logisch und prägnant? In diesem Kurs werden Sie erfahren, wie man den roten Faden entwickelt, einen Text klar strukturiert, prägnante Sätze formuliert und die richtigen Worte findet. Vor allem lernen Sie, wie man es "anpackt" und seinen Schreibprozess effektiv organisiert. Der Kurs wird auf Deutsch gehalten, alle Beispieltexte sind auf Englisch - der Workshop ist also gerade für Non-Natives geeignet.

Während des Workshops arbeiten wir mit Texten aus den Bereichen Medizin und Naturwissenschaften. Der Kurs richtet sich also besonders an Teilnehmer, die aus folgenden Fachbereichen kommen: Medizin, Biologie, Chemie, Pharmazie.

Was kommt eigentlich nach dem Studium bzw. der Doktorarbeit? Bewerben – aber wie, wann und wo? In diesem Workshop lernen Sie die einzelnen Phasen des Bewerbungsprozesses kennen. Dazu gehören als erste Schritte eine Standortanalyse und klare Zielformulierung, die Analyse von Stellenbeschreibungen und Recherche für Initiativbewerbungen.

Danach folgt die schriftliche Bewerbung mit der Zusammenstellung der relevanten Unterlagen und adäquaten Formulierungen. Presenting Science 1 - comprehensive, competent and convincing

Description:
Many factors influence the success of a scientific presentation. Besides excellent scientific work and knowledge of the field, other important factors are:

• confident and authentic appearance
• clear structure and convincing argumentation
• more diversified style and dramaturgy
• motivation and activation of the audience
• adequate time management
• adequate use of media and comprehensive figure design
• intentional use of voice, body language and requisites

Therefore, the workshop will include the following topics:

• Proper preparation and planning of scientific presentations
• Attractive presentations - methods and media
• Do's and Don'ts of PowerPoint and comprehensive slide design
• Dealing with nervousness
• Goofs, mishaps and "disasters" - How to deal with?
• Winning the audience over
• Appearance and presence
• Verbal aspects: Breathing and voice
• Non-verbal aspects: Mimics, gestures, postures and movement
• Self vs. External perception

The workshop will include many practical phases in order to apply the theory presented. Each participant is asked to bring with them a (e.g. power point) presentation of her/his scientific project. Other presentations, like posters, are also possible if they are in English. We will be exercising short presentations on this basis in the workshop, and will connect them with a video-feedback and a reflection on the structure, media design, etc. of each presentation.

It offers them possibilities to reflect upon future university careers or alternative career choices. Based on their individual profiles, participants develop their own vision for their future personal and professional lives.

Creating and Presenting Posters Effectively / Communication at Conferences

First workshop day:

Description:
A poster presentation includes a variety of aspects and challenges – visuals, speech, and very immediate personal contact. It is lower key than a conference or session presentation; yet with scores or even hundreds of other posters demanding attention, it requires a clear and understandable quality for viewers so that it stands out.

In this workshop, participants are asked to bring their own posters as a foundation. We will use these to take apart the characteristics all scientific posters should possess – simple structure, effective graphics, and properlydosed text. With the oral presentation being equally critical, each participant will learn (and have) to present their poster content in a three-minute slot. Each presentation will be evaluated regarding the individual strengths and challenges of the respective speaker.

The poster presentation is for many young scholars the first opportunity on a wider public stage. Success here will be a building block for further positive experiences at conferences.

Preparation:
To maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of the workshop, it is required to bring a poster. This allows all participants to receive individualized feedback.

Second workshop day:

Description:
Conferences and workshops give researchers ample opportunities to present their work - and themselves. Communication in professional forums is often decisive for future career options. This workshop helps participants to meet people with an attitude that is both adequate and self-confident, in informal situations ("socials") as well in academic discussion settings.

Both verbal and non-verbal strategies will be considered. Specifically, participants will learn
...how to identify players, roles and goals in conference settings,
...how to "play the rules of the game",
...how to initiate and encourage small talk,
...how to talk to decision-makers,
...how to build and maintain professional contacts and
...how to act self-confidently in discussion settings (plenary, sessions).

After the workshop, participants are able to plan professional gatherings in advance and feel more comfortable in the social setting of their academic community. Most importantly, they are able to set their own goals and to develop concrete strategies of achieving them.

Die Anforderungen an Führungspositionen sind vielfältig. Neben dem Fachwissen und den klassischen Führungsinstrumenten werden die handlungsbezogenen Kompetenzen immer wichtiger. Denn zu einer erfolgreichen Führungskraft gehören heute ausgeprägte Fähigkeiten im Bereich der Kommunikation.

Diese Fähigkeiten sind erlernbar und können mit verschiedenen Techniken trainiert werden. Mit Gleichgesinnten fällt es leichter, in diesem Workshop über das eigene Rollenverständnis zu reflektieren und neue Impulse aufzunehmen.

Methodik

Neben inhaltlichen Inputs bietet der Workshop ausreichend Raum, um in Einzel-, Paar- und Kleingruppenarbeit aktiv zu werden. In vielfältigen Rollenspielen werden neue Erfahrungen gesammelt und im kollegialen Feedback reflektiert.

Ziele

Sie kennen ihre Rolle als Führungskraft und können darüber selbstständig reflektieren.
Sie wissen, wie und mit welchen Führungsinstrumenten Sie Ihr Team zielorientiert leiten.
