Gateway to new languages and cultures

Through its University Language Centre, Heinrich Heine University, as an internationally established university, offers you an extensive programme in about 20 languages as well as German as a foreign language which is specially tailored to your requirements as a student. The programme encompasses general language courses in accordance with the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages” but also specialist language courses for the various faculties. In a unique partnership with the Confucius Institute at Heinrich Heine University, we also in particular organize a broad programme on campus for Chinese.

You naturally have the opportunity not just to learn a large number of languages but also to attain the corresponding certificates. Together with our cooperation partners, we organize internationally recognized tests in the world languages of English (IELTS – British Council), Spanish (DELE) and Chinese (HSK). Our language and certification programme is continuously upgraded and adapted to demand.

International applicants have the possibility to take the “German as a foreign language” test (TestDaF) prior to starting their studies. During their course, international students may take part free-of-charge in the German programme which runs parallel to their studies. The programme encompasses modules from beginner to advanced level, in grammar and phonetics as well as in listening, speaking and writing skills. Courses in the history and culture of the City of Düsseldorf round off the programme, in which, incidentally, not just students may participate but also visiting researchers at the University.
