The Düsseldorf Memorial and Education Centre, dedicated to all victims of Nazi persecution in Düsseldorf, was established in 1987. It is not only the city's lead institution for research, documentation and education on all matters pertaining to the local history of National Socialism but also become a centre of commemoration and dialogue between the generations.

The Düsseldorf Memorial and Education Centre is situated in the west wing of the listed building complex known as "Stadthaus". It was here that from 1933 to 1945 the police, the Gestapo, municipal authoritities, the SS and German army administrative offices were located.

After fundamental rebuilding and extension work, the Düsseldorf Memorial and Education Centre re-opened in May 2015 with its new permanent exhibition "Growing up in Nazi Düsseldorf". Young people's experiences and their way of life are at the heart of this exhibition. Dating from the years 1933 to 1945, the life stories featured here tell of courage and hope, fear and despair, conformism and violence, belief and betrayal. But the common theme is the range of options open to the young - even during the Nazi dictatorship - and their responses.

As an interactive forum for political education and commemoration, the Centre offers a wide range of additional lectures, exhibitions, educational activities and commemoration events. Furthermore, visitors have access to the Centre's extensive reference library and a rich selection of historical documents presented in the Open Archive. The Centre provides an audioguide in English for international guests. For guided tours in English, please call 0211 8996205 and book an appointment.
