Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Dr. phil. H. Michael Piper
was born in Kiel in 1952 and studied Medicine, Physics and Philosophy in Göttingen. There he received a doctorate in Medicine in 1979, and a PhD in 1980. In 1985 he completed his Habilitation (postdoctoral thesis) in Physiology. The main focus of his research was cardiology and the cardiovascular system. He subsequently carried out research in Liverpool, England, and Ottawa, Canada, and then became Professor of Physiology in Düsseldorf (1985-1994). In 1994 he was appointed Chair of Physiology at Justus-Liebig University in Giessen. From 2001-2006 he was Deputy Dean and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine there and from 2007-2008 Founding Director of Giessen Graduate School for Life Sciences. Since November 2008, Prof. Piper is President of Heinrich-Heine-University Duesseldorf.
