German Language Proficiency

  • News
Please apply for the preporatory German courses directly at the Language Center at: www.deutschkurse.de

The Heinrich-Heine-University Language Center offers two preparatory German courses (level B2 and C1), called DSH courses ("Deutsche Sprachpruefung fuer den Hochschulzugang": German Language Exam for University Admission). Please note that there are no beginners courses. DSH courses run for 10 weeks at 20 hours per week. There is a tuition fee of 600 for DSH courses plus an additional screening test fee of € 60. The Tuition fee for the C1-course includes the final DSH exam at the end of the semester. The screening test fee of € 60 has to be paid in full (in cash) on the day of the test. The tuition fee of € 600 is not to be paid until having successfully passed the screening test.

Applicants who have successfully passed the screening test and who have paid the tuition fee will be enrolled for no longer than one semester as language course students. Note however that language course enrollment is restricted to DSH courses and is not equivalent to general entry admission). In addition, for enrollment purposes, students have to pay the social contribution fee (which is to be paid by students of all programs) of approx. €150.

Students having successfully passed the final DSH exam may apply for general admission at Heinrich-Heine University.

Students may apply for a DSH Course at Heinrich-Heine University if they have proof of 600 hours of German language training, plus completed Intermediate I- course, as well as the general proof of higher education qualification which entitle students to study at Heinrich-Heine University.

The following achievements do not qualify for application:

  • DaF certificate issued by a Goethe-Institute (only proof of proficiency at beginners level)
  • proof of 600+ hours if only from courses at beginners level

Applicants who failed the final DSH exam will not be enrolled. Regular attendance is required to maintain enrollment. Unexcused absence from class will lead to exmatriculation.

The final DSH exam completes the DSH course. Students, who failed the exam, are permitted to retake the exam ONCE. A missed exam will be considered as 'failed' (if non-attendance can not be accounted for).

The German DSH course may be taken only ONCE and may not be repeated. Applicants, taking a DSH course at a different German University may apply for admission at Heinrich-Heine University only after having successfully completed the DSH course. Note that switching to a DSH course at Heinrich-Heine University whilst being enrolled in a DSH course at another university is not possible.
