Founded more than 100 years ago as 'academy for practical medicine', the Heinrich-Heine-University (HHU) Düsseldorf nowadays is the alma mater for more than 17000 students, 260 Professors and more than 6000 academic and non-academic staff members allocated in five faculties (Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Medicine, Arts, Law and Economics), the University Hospital, the University- and State-Library and the Administration Department. The HHU Düsseldorf has long standing cooperation with important research institutions in the surrounding region. Among them the
Max Planck Institute for Bioanorganic Chemistry and the
Forschungszentrum Jülich, one of Europe's largest research centers, also participate in the NRW Research School BioStruct.
