What BioStruct expects: Requirements and Selection Criteria
Application for BioStruct PhD scholarships is open to excellent candidates holding a MSc or Diploma degree in the fields of Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry or related. All BioStruct Applicants are expected to have achieved excellent results in their graduation and to show a high motivation and commitment for PhD studies in biostructural research applied to molecular medicine or biotechnology. To be considered applicants must have submitted a complete application prior to the Actual Submission Deadline and must be fluent in written and spoken English and/or German language.Underlying Selection Criteria for successful candidates are
- excellent academic and personal achievements of the applicant, evident from transcripts and other application documents,
- the course of applicant's studies and applicants research background,
- motivation, commitment and potential of the applicant to fulfill a PhD study in the field of structural biology,
- the outcome of the recommendations by referees,
- the outcome and performance during the interview (only final selection round).
What BioStruct offers: The BioStruct PhD Scholarships
Successful applicants are awarded with a monthly stipend of 1345,- EUR. The BioStruct PhD Scholarship is additionally funded with contributions to travel expenses of up to 1260,- EUR per year and contributions to research expenses of up to 15.000,- EUR per year. For PhD studies BioStruct offers exciting Interdisciplinary Research Projects and integration into the 'expert environments' and infrastructure of according research groups. PhD studies are supervised by two Academic Advisors, of which at least one is a biostructural expert. The PhD research project is complemented by innovative Education Programs, including advanced teaching and training in scientific methods and theory, as well as in transferable skills. After completing their studies and PhD thesis, candidates can obtain the german academic degree 'Dr. rer. nat.' (doctor rerum naturae, i.e. doctor of natural sciences) according to the Rules and Regulation for PhD Studies of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf.General information on the Heinrich-Heine-University and Düsseldorf:

1. Please download the following application forms and documents.(You need Adobe Acrobat Reader version 5.0 or higher, Adobe Acrobat version 5.0 or higher, or an equal PDF viewer to fill in the forms.):

Application Checklist2. Note that only complete applications arriving prior to the deadline will be considered. Therefore, please read the information on this website and the downloaded 'Instruction' of the 'BioStruct Application Form' carefully, before filling in the form or contacting the BioStruct office for further assistance.
3. Use the downloaded 'BioStruct Application Form' and type in your information in English. Please scan all documents requested in this Form and preferably put them into a separate, single pdf-file. Please do not scan with more than 300 dpi in black/white or grayscale. No other application documents than the completed 'BioStruct Application Form' and therein requested documents (cf. downloaded 'Application Checklist' and 'Instruction' of the application form) will be taken into consideration.
4. Send in your application in two steps:
Step 1: Sent the completed 'BioStruct Application Form' together with your scanned documents (preferably in a separate, single pdf-file) by email to:

5. Please forward the downloaded 'BioStruct Letter of Recommendation Form' and the downloaded 'Information for Referees' to the persons willing to write a recommendation. Please ensure that the letters of recommendation arrive at BioStruct prior to the application deadline.
6. Selection of candidates will take place in two rounds:
I. First Selection of candidates will be made on basis of the application documents. All applicants will be informed on the outcome of the first selection by email. Candidates passing this round successfully will be invited for the second selection round.
II. Final selection of candidates will be done on basis of an interview by the selection committee. The interview will include an oral presentation and followed by a discussion. Candidates passing this round successfully will be invited to become a BioStruct fellow awarded with a BioStruct Scholarship.
