Moot Pre-Rounds 2008: Brewery Night
Enjoy an evening snack and refreshments at a local brewery
Participants and arbitrators are invited to meet for an evening snack and refreshments at a local brewery after the Guided City Walk "Duesseldorf Old Town by Night". Snacks, traditional Altbier and softdrinks will be provided on a limited basis. A-la-carte orders for other dishes and drinks will be at your own cost.
Duesseldorf is famous for its beer called Altbier, often shortly referred to as "Alt". The old beer is a top-fermented beer originating in Westphalia and in Lower Saxony. The fermentation process takes place at a higher temperature than the one used for a bottom-fermented beer, since at the time of its invention there was no technical cooling available. When cooling was developed in 1873 by Carl von Linde, bottom-fermented brewing spread and Pils became popular. Today, both kinds of beer are available. In many German dialects, Alt becomes "Aal" ("Dat aale beer"). You can already see from the similar wording that the British "Ale" designates a beer of a top-fermented kind of brewing as well, similar to the Duesseldorf Alt.
