1.25 Million € funding for Stem Cell Research in Düsseldorf, Bonn and Bochum

The Ministry of Science and Research for North Rhine-Westphalia has established a research programme to provide financial support for junior scientists in the field of life science medicine. Its third competition is devoted entirely to stem cell research. Within the context of the Stem Cell Network NRW, promising young postdoctorates received assistance in setting up their own young research teams. Seven of the eight universities engaged in stem cell research in North Rhine-Westphalia sent their young scientists to Düsseldorf, to the "First International Meeting of the Stem Cell Network North Rhine Westphalia", where their projects were judged by a group of international experts. Only three of the projects were awarded the prize money, worth 1.25 million euros per project over the next five years. It was the third competition for research funding organized by the Science and Research Ministry in North Rhine-Westphalia and the winners of this year`s prize were the Carola Meier (Bochum), Frank Edenhofer (Bonn) and Markus Müschen (Düsseldorf). This decision was made at the occasion of the First International Meeting of the Stem Cell Network North Rhine Westphalia on November 26 and 27, 2002 in Düsseldorf. The main focus of this international meeting at the Congress Center, Düsseldorf was the encouragement of established and upcoming research activities in the area of stem cell biology. Internationally renowned experts from various fields of stem cell research will gave talks on their work and the latest discoveries. In addition, the top scientists also doubled up as the jury, deciding which young research teams were to receive research grants:
